The UEFA European Championship: it is particularly worthwhile to use public transport services on days when Budapest is the host city

Budapest, 12 June 2021 – Among other measures, BKK is doing its best to provide more frequent services to make fans’ entertainment smooth and joyous during the European football championship. The Ferenc Puskás Stadium hosting four matches can be reached most easily either on foot or by public transport. Passengers are recommended to avoid the surrounding area by car on match days, as in that area road closures are expected on 15 June (Tuesday), which could have an impact on the transport of passengers passing through the Eastern part of Pest, especially Zugló.

BKK Centre for Budapest Transport has prepared for the most significant football event of the old continent, a.k.a the European championship, in the framework of which, there are four football matches to be hosted and organised in the Ferenc Puskás Stadium, such as

• on 15 June (Tuesday) from 18:00, Hungary vs. Portugal,

• on 19 June (Saturday) from 15:00, Hungary vs. France,

• on 23 June (Wednesday) from 21:00, Portugal vs. France (team match),

• on 27 June (Sunday) from 18:00, Eight Finals in Budapest.

Please note that during the events no parking is possible at and in the surrounding area of Ferenc Puskás Stadium where also road closures are expected from 14:00.  It may be practical for passengers who opt for reaching the venue by car to use car parks along the routes of public transport services. BKK would like to recommend that fans reach the venue by fixed-rail public transport running more frequently, i.e. metro - and tramlines  and as much as possible passengers avoid that area by car on days when the matches are held.

Road closures could have a significant impact on the transport of passengers passing through the Eastern part of Pest, especially Zugló. BKK would like to recommend that passengers plan their trips in advance, if they may, pay particular attention to BKK’s information boards and on 15 (Tuesday) avoid the surrounding area of Hősök tere and the Ferenc Puskás Stadium in case they do not head for the match.

Passengers preferring to use Budapest’s public transport services are able to reach the venue primarily by metrolines M2 and M4 or by tramline 1. BKK provides smooth public transport services by higher service capacities. The following factors are worthwhile to be taken into account in the transport hubs situated in the vicinity of the stadium:

• Puskás Ferenc Stadion M

At the station of metroline M2, two exit points can be used. The UEFA EURO 2020 pictograms show the metro exit points through which the arena entry point indicated on the ticket can be accessed. Passengers using the services of tramline 1 are able to get access to the stadium on foot from the Egressy út / Hungária körút stop or the Puskás Ferenc Stadion M stop and in the surrounding area the staff will help visitors find their way and get inside the venue.

• Keleti pályaudvar M

At stations of metrolines M2 and M4, there are UEFA EURO 2020 pictograms showing the way to the Stadium via Verseny utca and Dózsa György út.

The month-long summer football tournament brings significant changes to the life of Budapest’s passengers, thus BKK provides information on the details on a continuous basis. BKK would like to kindly recommend that to plan their trips, passengers use the BKK FUTÁR, which calculates the most appropriate route for passengers to reach their destinations based on real-time information on public transport lines.

Please note that from 14 June (Monday), Airport shuttle bus 100E is in service again, providing direct connection between the city centre and Liszt Ferenc International Airport between 07:00 and 21:00. Please find further information on busline 100E at BKK’s website, and on the line’s detailed schedule under this link.

During the four Budapest-based match days, BKK provides ticket sales with extended opening hours at the Customer Service Centre situated at Keleti railway station and also at the ticket office to be found at the Puskás Ferenc metro station. In addition, there are 12 regularly-disinfected BKK TVMs operable at Keleti railway station, while there are five regularly-disinfected BKK TVMs operable at Puskás Ferenc Stadion. On match days, BKK’s staff is at passengers’ disposal at TVMs operable at the busiest spots of metro entrances to help them purchase BKK’s tickets, travelcards or passes or find their way. Passengers have the chance to find the nearest sales point at BKK’s Sales Point finder. Several types of popular passes and travelcards can be purchased via the public transport mobile ticket app. More information is available on the mobile ticket at BKK’s website.

In tight cooperation with FKF Nonprofit Zrt. and the Municipality of Budapest Law Enforcement Directorate (FÖRI), BKK considers it important that they keep the Keleti railway station and Puskás Ferenc Stadion metro stations and also the important areas in terms of the venue clean and in order even during the European Championship, due to which, they increase the safety and comfort of persons wishing to recreate.

The armband required to enter the event may be worthwhile to be collected one day before the event

The organisers’ goal is to provide smooth verification of the Immunity Card issued for persons who have already been vaccinated. Fans have the chance to receive their armband required to enter the venue at three easily-accessible spots, such as at Groupama Arena (Stand B, next to the Statute of the Eagle), on Dózsa György út (Városliget, Promenad) and at László Papp Budapest Sports Arena. Pick up-points are open from the very early morning to evening in accordance with the information provided by the Hungarian Football Federation. Fans arriving from Budapest and from  its surrounding area have the chance to pick up their wristband most conveniently from 8:00 to 20:00 one day before the matches, while foreign tourists can collect their wristband even  at Liszt Ferenc International Airport only on the day of the given match.
