Budapest, 14 September 2026 – Cyclists’ breakfast, a street-food promenade, heritage vehicles, interactive programmes, a gaming corner, test tracks, MOL Bubi bikes available for adoption, guided tours, and cycling excursions await visitors to this year’s European Mobility Week between 16 and 22 September 2026. Organised by the BKK Centre for Budapest Transport and the Municipality of Budapest, this year’s event is themed “Mobility for Everyone,” with a focus on Intergenerational Fairness.
The highlight of the programme series will be the Car-Free Weekend on 19 and 20 September, when the Liberty Bridge, Fővám tér, Vámház körút, the Lower Pest Embankment, and—for the first time this year—the Műegyetem embankment area will be dedicated to active mobility, public transport, and pedestrians.
“Mobility for Everyone”—building on last year’s success, this is the motto of this year’s European Mobility Week, with a special emphasis on intergenerational fairness. Sustainable transportation systems must be accessible to everyone—regardless of age, income, place of residence, gender, or abilities. Organised by BKK and the Budapest Municipality, this series of events aims to raise awareness of the environmental impacts of transportation, encourage the use of cleaner modes of transport, improve quality of life in cities, promote inclusive mobility, and support local initiatives.
Another important aspect is for cities and municipalities to showcase their own sustainable transportation initiatives, involve residents in decision-making, and use playful, experience-based programmes to encourage people to make lasting changes to their transportation habits and to prioritise environmentally friendly solutions in the long term. These goals are supported by European Mobility Week, which kicks off on 16 September with a Cyclists’ Breakfast. As part of the event, BKK staff will be awaiting in Városháza Park between 7:00 and 9:00 in the morning with pastries, fruit, and drinks for those arriving on a MOL Bubi bike or their own bicycle.
Transport heritage vehicles, traffic safety, and equal opportunity
On 19 and 20 September—Saturday and Sunday—from 10:00 to 22:00, visitors to the Car-Free Weekend can ride vintage vehicles—including the oldest operational wooden-framed trams, the “Bengáli,” and the most modern CAF tram—along Vámház körút, the Szabadság Bridge, Fővám tér, and the Műegyetem rakpart, as well as retro and modern trolleybuses as well as old and new buses.
To conclude the Safety Week event series, BKK—in cooperation with the Hungarian Insurance Association, the National Police Headquarters (ORFK), and the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK)—welcomes visitors to Műegyetem rakpart, where road safety and equal opportunity take centre stage. Those interested can experience the daily lives of passengers with special travel needs, practice using ramps, and learn about safe wheelchair travel.
At the food festival along Vámház körút and Műegyetem rakpart, visitors can choose from a variety of food trucks. For families, the Budapest Transport Company’s (BKV) mobile playhouse also offers a special experience: the only double-articulated Van Hool AGG 300 bus, converted into a 25-metre-long playhouse and decorated with children’s drawings, is a place where even the little ones can have a great time.
BKK Tents: design, innovation, and playful learning
In the BKK’s “Design Rákóczi út with Us!” tent, participants can interactively reimagine the future look and layout of Rákóczi út. In the Innováró installation, a unique space reminiscent of a tram’s passenger compartment awaits visitors, who can learn about the most important developments in Budapest’s public transportation system, including the renovation of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út.
In the BudapestGO, Gamer Corner, and play area, visitors can try out a bus driver simulator, and in the BKK FUTÁR tent, they can test the on-board unit (OBU) used by drivers. Participants can also check in for their favourite line, listen to the audio announcements, and try out the interactive on-street digital displays.
Anyone can now sit in a BKK traffic control vehicle to experience firsthand how the professionals who are responsible for the smooth operation of the city’s transportation system day in and day out do their jobs.
Fans of the revamped MOL Bubi can take photos at the photo booth, “adopt” a bike, and win prizes by completing a simple quiz.
Guided walks and bike tours
During Mobility Week’s guided walks and bike tours, BKK staff will present the past, present, and future of Budapest’s transportation system. Among other things, participants can learn about the history of trolleybus and tram services, gain insight into the behind-the-scenes processes and operational management of public transport, discover pedestrian-friendly inner-city developments, and explore smart, data-driven transport solutions.
The programmes include a bike tour exploring future visions for Rákóczi út, practical cycling advice, and a presentation on the history of trams, which traces the development of the Budapest fixed-rail transport system from horse-drawn trams to modern CAF trams.
