This is how traffic on József körút and Baross utca will change
Ahead of the comprehensive refurbishment of the Grand Boulevard, low-cost, rapidly implementable measures will be carried out as early as summer 2026 to make traffic safer and more predictable on József körút between Scheiber Sándor utca and the Corvin-negyed, as well as on the section of Baross utca between the Grand Boulevard and Mária utca. The improvements are being carried out as part of the REALLOCATE project, funded by the European Union, in collaboration with BKK, the Municipality of Budapest and Budapest Közút. The current measures do not replace the comprehensive renovation of the Grand Boulevard planned for 2029 but rather serve as preparatory steps towards it. Elements are being implemented that are also included in the long-term plan: for example, protected cycle lanes on the Grand Boulevard, as well as the creation of organised parking and loading facilities.
Why are immediate measures necessary?
Traffic on the Grand Boulevard has posed serious challenges for years: conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists are a regular occurrence, whilst goods transport and loading also present problems. Although the complete, end-to-end regeneration of the Grand Boulevard is underway between Nyugati railway station and Boráros tér, solutions to certain problems will be in place as early as 2029. The REALLOCATE project enables BKK to implement low-budget yet effective improvements right now, within the existing street layout, which will also enhance road safety.
Key elements of the project

Separation of pedestrian and bicycle traffic
On the section of József körút between Scheiber Sándor utca and the Corvin-negyed, the bicycle lane will be moved from the pavement onto the carriageway, thereby eliminating conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists. -
New, protected bicycle lanes on Baross utca
Two-way, protected cycle lanes will be created between the Grand Boulevard and Mária utca, connecting to the main cycle routes. -
More parking spaces on the Grand Boulevard
Parking spaces will be relocated from Baross utca to József körút. Whilst there will be 14 fewer spaces on Baross utca, more will be created on the Grand Boulevard. -
Loading bays
Several new loading bays will also be created on the Grand Boulevard, reducing the dangerous and inconvenient situations caused by illegal stopping. This was highlighted in several previous surveys by local residents and businesses operating in the area. -
New Mobi-points
Six new Mobi-points will be created between Scheiber Sándor utca and Pál utca to make it easier to park bicycles and scooters, ensuring that micro-mobility devices are not left on the pavement in disorder.
Project Timeline
Work began in early August 2026. In the first phase, work will take place on József körút, between Scheiber Sándor utca and Pál utca, followed by work on Baross utca. The project is expected to be completed by early September.
Funding
The developments are being carried out entirely with funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 REALLOCATE programme, amounting to 30 million HUF gross.
