Budapest, 11 June 2026 - BKK Centre for Budapest Transport to modify the terms for using discounted Budapest-passes for students starting 15 June 2026 to make the discount system more transparent and easier to control. The change affects pupils and students holding foreign student IDs.
Starting from Monday, 15 June 2026, only those students holding student IDs from foreign countries who also have a Hungarian residential address will be eligible to use discounted Budapest-passes (3,450 forints). While EU, Icelandic, Liechtenstein, Norwegian, or Swiss citizenship remains a requirement for using foreign student IDs, a foreign student ID or proof of citizenship alone will no longer be sufficient to use the discounted pass in the future. To prove eligibility, a Hungarian address card must be presented in addition to the student ID card.
The change also affects how tickets and passes are purchased: starting 15 June, at all in-person sales locations, affected international students will be informed of the new conditions, and they will only be able to purchase a discounted pass once their Hungarian address has been verified. The list of eligible ID types will also be updated in ticket vending machines (TVMs) and mobile ticketing apps. The system will clearly indicate that, in addition to the conditions listed above, only students who are at least 14 years old and have a Hungarian address are eligible for the discounted pass.
The BKK’s goal is to make the discount system more transparent and verifiable, while continuing to provide affordable public transport for students in Hungary.
