Budapest, 16 December 2024 – BKK Centre for Budapest Transport is making it even easier to use digital passes. The mobility manager has added a new feature, a so-called "boarding" button to the BudapestGO application, which is an enhancement of the currently available "metro" button for overground vehicles. Thanks to this new feature, it will be easier and faster for passengers to board a bus or trolleybus via the front door, as no code scanning will be required. Clicking on the "boarding" button will instantly display a moving graphic to be presented for pass control. The new feature will be available on daily travelcards as well as passes, but for occasional tickets, code scanning remains necessary.
BKK is continuously monitoring customer needs and will develop its services in the light of user feedback. The company's aim is to make public transport more attractive to more people and to increase the number of people using its digital solutions on a daily basis. BKK has therefore enhanced the "metro" button function, which is already available in the app, so that when arriving at metro stations, the digital pass can be displayed in the app with a single tap. This feature will also be available on street-level transport in the future with the so-called "boarding" button, which will appear on passes as well as on daily travelcards and will be accessible from both the app and the widget.
The new feature will eliminate the need to scan a code when using a pass, by simply clicking on the "boarding" button when boarding and selecting the current line, which will be detected by the app using the GPS network. A moving graphic is then displayed, which passengers need to show to the driver when getting on board through the front door or to control staff at the metro entrance for inspection.
Important things to know about the boarding button
The new development will make it easier to use Budapest-passes, Pest County passes, Hungary Passes and daily travelcards. Passes will only need to be scanned if requested by the ticket inspector at the metro entrance or if the front-door boarding applies to the line. However, for occasional tickets, such as the single ticket, which must be validated in all cases, code scanning will still be required to validate and display the moving graphic. The boarding button can also be used on Volánbusz services within Budapest.
You should tap on the boarding button at the stop before the journey starts, when you can see the arriving vehicle. If there is more than one bus with the same line number in the app, you can choose which one you want to take based on the license plate number of the vehicle. On the metro network, you do not need to select the desired line, only the metro station.
To access this new feature, you need to update the app. To keep BudapestGO up-to-date with the latest developments, you should select automatic update in the phone settings menu, so that the latest upgrades are always available in the future.
