Budapest, 12 June 2025 – Pedestrian-friendly streets, more open spaces and cleaner air in Inner Erzsébetváros – traffic will change significantly in the inner part of District 7 from Sunday, 22 June. Under the new traffic pattern, several street sections will be accessible only to pedestrians and cyclists, certain streets will be accessible only with a permit, and the current direction of traffic will change in several places. After a trial period lasting until the end of the summer, experts will draw up the final alignment based on their experiences and the feedback received. The aim is to make Inner Erzsébetváros more liveable and to give pedestrians and cyclists a higher priority in the district.
Inner Erzsébetváros, i.e. the part of District 7 within the Grand Boulevard, is one of the most densely populated areas of Budapest, where the number of pedestrians significantly exceeds that of motor vehicle users. The narrow streets of the district are not suitable for meeting the demands of traffic, so at the request of the Climate Protection, Transport and Urban Development Committee of the Municipality of Budapest, BKK, Budapest Közút and the local government of District 7 have developed a new traffic pattern.
The new traffic pattern will come into effect at the end of June
From Sunday, 22 June 2025, until the end of summer the following changes apply:
- Kazinczy utca between Rákóczi út and Dob utca, Dob utca between Rumbach Sebestyén utca and Síp utca on a trial basis, and the section of Csányi utca between Nagymező utca and Dob utca will be open only to pedestrians and cyclists, with no motor vehicle access (marked with a red line on the map)
- Akácfa utca between Wesselényi utca and Dob utca will be open only to pedestrians and cyclists, with no motor vehicle acces between 21:00 and 6:00
- access will be possible only with a permit to the section of Király utca between Rumbach Sebestyén utca and Károly körút and the section of Madách Imre út between Rumbach Sebestyén utca and Asbóth utca, as well as to Asbóth utca
- a short section of Wesselényi utca between Rumbach Sebestyén utca and Síp utca will become two-way on a trial basis, and Holló utca will be accessible by motor vehicles via this route
- the direction of traffic on Kis Diófa utca will be reversed, and it will now be accessible from Király utca;
- on the north-eastern side of Klauzál tér, in front of the market hall, two-way traffic will be discontinued, and the section will be accessible towards Dob utca in the same way as Klauzál utca.
The previous traffic pattern will remain in place on the other streets in this part of the city, meaning that vehicles will still be able to enter and pass through (marked with green arrows on the map).
Changes affecting parking spaces
With the introduction of the new traffic pattern, parking regulations will also change in Inner Erzsébetváros. New residential parking spaces will be designated on Wesselényi utca between Kazinczy utca and Síp utca, on Rumbach Sebestyén utca between Károly körút, and on several sections of Klauzál tér. Due to the introduction of two-way traffic, parking will only be allowed on the south side of Wesselényi utca between Síp utca and Rumbach Sebestyén utca, instead of the current parallel parking on both sides. During the planning process, experts took the interests of local residents into account, preserving the number of parking spaces for residents.
Traffic pattern to be finalised by autumn
During the test period, which will last until the end of summer, experts will continuously collect experience and feedback, which will be examined and used to develop the final traffic pattern for the area.
