How to use public transport with your furry friend

Despite the fact that a great number of passengers use public transport services in the company of their four-legged pets, many travellers are unaware of the rules of transporting dogs. We have collected a few tips for the travel safety of both animals and humans on the metro, tram, trolleybus, suburban railway and bus network.

Did you know that dogs are not allowed to travel on a seat, but only on the vehicle floor? Did you also know that you need to carry your dog’s valid vaccination certificate when you travel together? Are you aware of the fact that the escalator is the main safety hazard and primary cause of accidents for your pet, which is why you need to carry your dog in your arms?

These rules serve the purpose of protecting passengers and pets alike; hence, all responsible pet owners need to keep them.

Frequently asked questions

I would like to carry my by bike on board. What type of ticket is required for transporting bikes?

Bicycles can be transported with a 450 HUF single ticket or an individual ticket from the block of 10 tickets on suitable BKK vehicles and HÉV within Budapest (on line D14 with a ferry ticket for bicycle). If you want to take your bike several times a month on a BKK or HÉV vehicle within Budapest, you should buy a bike pass for 540 HUF. Don't forget that in addition to the bicycle fare, you also need a valid ticket or pass. Besides a normal size bicycle, only such an additional bike can be carried on board which qualifies as hand luggage (max. 41 cm / 16”), such as a child bike, which can be transported free of charge on any vehicle, provided it does not damage or pollute other passengers or equipment. The serial number of the identity card used for your own pass must be indicated on the bike pass, as the bike pass is only valid together with it and can only be used by the holder.

Which lines will take bikes on board?

Many of our lines: several buses, trams and even the cogwheel railway and the HÉV suburban railway lines. You can always find the current list of bicycle-friendly services here: https://bkk.hu/en/travel-information/cycling-scooters-and-walking/cycling/bikes-on-board/.

Where are the designated areas for transporting bikes on board?

On board buses, the designated area for bikes is facing the second /middle door, and it is also used for transporting baby carriages. One bike per bus is allowed.  The door to be used for boarding with a bike is marked with a bicycle pictogram on dedicated buses whose front side also has a pictogram to indicate that the bus can take a bike on board. Bikes need to be fastened using the provided hook-and-loop (Velcro) fasteners. The driver may deny boarding with a bike if the vehicle is crowded or if fastening the bike is not feasible for some reason: https://bkk.hu/en/travel-information/cycling-scooters-and-walking/cycling/bikes-on-board/

I would like to take my bike on board, but the vehicle must be boarded through the front door, what should I do?

Prior to getting on, you need to present the required tickets or passes (fares for both passenger and bicycle) to the driver at the front door and then proceed to the designated (middle or back) door to board with the bike. The bike needs to be securely fastened before departure.

Why can bicycles be carried on board? If you are cycling, why not ride your bike to your destination?

There may be situations where it is a huge help to get on the bus or tram with your bike. These can be a puncture or a low battery on an electric bike, a summer downpour, or the typical bike use in the hilly areas of Budapest: while it is comfortable to ride the bike down the hill in the morning, some may get tired on the way home. For them too, taking buses or trams instead of climbing hills is a good option. And even those who are older or have small children should not have to give up cycling.
