Transport in Budapest on the 20 August national holiday

If you are travelling in the city centre, we advise you not to drive, but to use public transport instead, especially the metro network – metro services will run until 2:30 a.m. on August 20.

Hungary's national holiday is on August 20. There will be a number of events in Budapest on this day, and traffic restrictions and road closures are expected in the city centre. From Saturday, August 15, the Chain Bridge will be closed, and restrictions are expected on both the Buda and Pest embankments, in the Buda Castle District, on Műegyetem rakpart, around Kossuth Lajos Square and on Várkert rakpart. The operation of the affected BKK services will also change, with several trams and buses running on modified routes over the weekend.

The main attraction of this year’s national holiday will be the evening show, which will culminate in a fireworks display. The show can be enjoyed between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. on August 20 along the Buda and Pest lower and upper embankments, between Margaret Bridge and Petőfi Bridge. To make it easier to reach the fireworks display and facilitate the journey home, many of our services will run more frequently than usual before and after the event.
