Hungary's national holiday is the 20th of August. On this day, and on the days leading up to it, there will be a number of events in Budapest, so traffic restrictions and road closures are to be expected in the city center. The embankments in both Buda and Pest, the Margaret Bridge, the Chain Bridge, Elisabeth and Liberty Bridges will be closed on several occasions, and there will be restrictions in Buda Castle, while the operation of the affected BKK lines will also change: several trams and buses will run on modified routes over the weekend.
If you are travelling in the city centre on Saturday-Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, we advise you not to drive, but to use public transport instead, especially the metro network.
The main attraction of the national holiday is the fireworks display on 20 August, which can be admired between 21:00 and 21:30 on the Buda and Pest Lower and Upper Embankments, between Margaret Bridge and Petőfi Bridge. In order to make the fireworks display more accessible and to facilitate the journey home, many of our services will run more frequently than usual before and after the event.
