From 16 to 20 March 2015 – Pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, chairlift

Changes affecting pedestrians

Due to the reconstruction of the Várfok utca tram tunnel at Széll Kálmán tér the tunnel was closed on 16 March (Monday) for several months. As a result, the square, the metro station and Margit körút are not accessible via the tunnel. The recommended pedestrian paths are modified as follows:

  • From the temporary terminus of trams 18, 59 and 61 on Széll Kálmán tér, the square, the metro station and Margit körút are accessible via the stairs leading up to Vérmező út, then via the stairs leading down to the square.
  • The fastest way between the two route sections of tram 61 – namely between the Széll Kálmán tér and Káplár utca terminuses – is on foot via Krisztina körút, at the same time we still recommend to take buses 91 and 102 both running on extended routes:
    • Bus 91 runs on an extended route between Nyugati pályaudvar M and Királyhágó tér, serving Széll Kálmán tér M.
    • Bus 102 runs on an extended route between Szendrő utca and the Chairlift in Zugliget serving Széll Kálmán tér M.

Public road restrictions

The traffic alignment at the junction of Krisztina körút – Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor has changed significantly. Three minor junctions with traffic light control have been constructed temporarily instead of Krisztina körút – Széll Kálmán tér – Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor major junction: one replacing the major junction mentioned above, another in the area of the bus park while the third one on the northern carriageway of Széll Kálmán tér.

  • Turning left from Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor towards Margit körút is possible in two lanes as usual, but on a modified route.
  • Proceeding from Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor towards Krisztina körút is possible only in one lane, without traffic light control, according to the priority rule.
  • The bus lane has been temporarily closed between Dékán utca and Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor, while the traffic can proceed on the same route from Margit körút towards Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor.
  • On Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor between Széll Kálmán tér and Retek utca proceeding outwards from the city is possible only on one lane.
  • Those who are arriving from Krisztina körút have to face the most significant changes, as the direct connection between Krisztina körút and Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor outwards from the city has been temporarily terminated. First they have to turn right on two lanes, then proceed through the three above mentioned junctions with traffic light control to reach the carriageway on the northern side of Széll Kálmán tér through which Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor can be reached.
  • The access to Dékán utca and Margit körút from Krisztina körút has not changed.

However we have created the temporary traffic alignment of Széll Kálmán tér in a way to preserve the traffic throughput capacity of the square as much as possible, traffic deceleration and minor congestions may occur on the main routes heading towards the square.

Changes affecting cyclists

We kindly ask cyclists to use the bypasses during the reconstruction of Széll Kálmán tér.

The area will be accessible for cyclists from the spring of 2016.

Recommended bicycle path north of the square:
Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor (Városmajor)–Retek utca–Széna tér

Recommended bicycle path south of the square:
Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor (Városmajor)–Ignotus utca–Csaba utca–Hajnóczy József utca–Vérmező
