From 27 August to 17 October 2015 – Pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, chairlift
As a minor change from 30 August 2015 (Sunday) the pedestrian traffic is controlled by a traffic light at the junction of Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor–Krisztina körút–Margit körút.
Service on the Hűvösvölgy section of tram 61 from 31 August
From 31 August (Monday) the temporary Széll Kálmán tér M terminus of tram 61 departing from Hűvösvölgy is relocated to the Margit körút side of the square next to the terminus of trams 4 and 6, therefore the transfer time is reduced significantly:
- Trams 4 and 6 are accessible on the other side of the platform.
- Metro line M2 is accessible on foot in 2–3 minutes.
- Buses departing from or serving Széll Kálmán tér are also accessible more easily.
No changes apply to the service on the southern route section of tram 61, it continues to run between the Széll Kálmán tér M temporary terminus and Móricz Zsigmond körtér.
From 8 October 2015 (Thursday) the outer traffic lane of the originally two-lane route turning from Margit körút to Széll Kálmán tér will be closed on a longer section between Retek utca and the bus turn due to construction works on the square. Only one lane will be accessible again from Csalogány utca to Széll Kálmán tér due to the traffic restriction.
On Sunday morning, 27 September 2015, construction will commence on the northern section of the square affecting traffic lanes through the area as follows:
- The most important change is that only one lane will be open from the square and Krisztina körút to Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor. The lanes on Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor to the city centre will not be affected.
- The lane alignment from Margit körút to Krisztina körút will be modified with two lanes remaining open through the square.
- One traffic lane will remain open from Krisztina körút to Margit körút, but the alignment of the lane will be modified.
No changes will apply at other sections of the square. Public transport services will not be affected either.
From Sunday, 13 September 2015 one-way traffic order applies in Dékán utca towards Fény utca and the two lanes from Margit körút towards Krisztina körút are diverted due to public utility and road construction works between Dékán utca and Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor. Motorists arriving from Fillér utca can reach Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor via Ezredes utca, while for those arriving from Fillér utca to the Retek utca–Dékán utca–Fény utca junction the duration of the green light is extended, enabling more vehicles to turn left towards Fény utca. Due to the new traffic alignment, buses 116 and 149 run on modified routes.
From 30 August 2015 (Sunday) the traffic is controlled by traffic lights at the Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor–Krisztina körút–Margit körút junction in every direction just as it was before the start of the square reconstruction. Therefore the throughput capacity slightly decreases for the motorists passing from Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor towards Krisztina körút. Both lanes are diverted on the Margit körút side of Széll Kálmán tér towards Krisztina körút.
From 30 August (Sunday) until 5 September (Saturday) a small area in the middle of the carriageway is closed in front of Krisztina körút 1–3 due to construction works, but 2 lanes are open to motorists in both directions.
Due to public utility works only one lane is open on Vérmező út for motorists turning right from Attila út and arriving from Krisztina körút. BKK kindly asks motorists to bypass Széll Kálmán tér.
From 31 August (Monday) the temporary terminus of tram 61 departing from Hűvösvölgy is relocated next to the terminus of trams 4 and 6 on Széll Kálmán tér therefore the transfer time is reduced significantly as the square refurbishment continues: trams 4 and 6, metro line M2 and the buses departing from or serving Széll Kálmán tér are accessible with less walk. Due to the preparation works of the new temporary terminus of tram 61 from 27 August (Thursday) until 30 August (Sunday) replacement bus 61 runs instead of the tram between Hűvösvölgy and Déli pályaudvar M. No changes apply to the service on the southern route section of tram 61, it continues to run between the Széll Kálmán tér M temporary terminus and Móricz Zsigmond körtér.
Due to track construction works between 27 (Thursday) and 30 (Sunday) August the lane next to the tram track on Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor ahead of Széll Kálmán tér towards the square. Therefore only one lane is open temporarily to motorists towards Széna tér. The second lane turning right towards Krisztina körút is shortened, therefore congestions may occur.
We kindly ask cyclists to use the bypasses during the reconstruction of Széll Kálmán tér.
The area will be accessible for cyclists from the spring of 2016.
