From 1 August to 26 September 2015 – Pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, chairlift
From 2 August 2015 (Sunday) pedestrian traffic temporarily cannot be provided at the inner area of the square due to the development works (public utility, sewerage and electrical). Therefore pedestrians are diverted to the edges of the square. Buses departing from Várfok utca and from Csaba utca are accessible from the metro and from the terminus of trams 4 and 6 through the stairs in Vérmező utca then via Vérmező utca–Várfok utca or from the direction of Margit körút. However it is recommended to transfer to some services at Déli pályaudvar M (see below) in order to avoid long walk. Trams 18, 59 and 61 continue to serve their temporary Várfok utca terminus, which is accessible as usual.
BKK recommends the following footpaths when transferring between services serving Széll Kálmán tér:
- For those who wish to avoid long walk when transferring from metro line M2 to bus 21, 21A, 139, 140 or 140A (or to cogwheel railway replacement bus 60 between 3–17 August) it is recommended to transfer rather at Déli pályaudvar terminus, not at Széll Kálmán tér. When transferring at Széll Kálmán tér the bus terminus is accessible from the metro station via Vérmező utca stairs–Vérmező utca–Várfok utca or from the direction of Margit körút. The latter route is 3–4 minutes longer on foot.
- For those who wish to transfer from tram 4 or 6 to buses 21, 21A, 139, 140 or 140A (or to cogwheel railway replacement bus 60 between 3–17 August) it is also recommended to walk via Vérmező utca stairs–Vérmező utca–Várfok utca or via Margit körút–Várfok utca.
- The temporary terminus of buses 128 and 129 in Csaba utca is also accessible via this way similarly to the Széll Kálmán tér M stop of buses 5, 39, 91 and 102 on Krisztina körút.
- Those who wish to transfer from metro line M2 to trams 18, 59 or 61 to Móricz Zsigmond körtér are not affected by the traffic restrictions from 3 August.
- For those who wish to transfer from metro line M2 to tram 61 to Hűvösvölgy it is recommended to reach the temporary tram terminus in Káplár utca via Margit körút and Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor.
On Monday, 24 August 2015, utility construction in connection with the refurbishment of Széll Kálmán tér will continue at the Attila út junction of Vérmező út. As a result, only one lane will remain open next to the work area on Vérmező út to straight-going traffic coming from Krisztina körút and to right-turning traffic coming from Attila út. Congestion is likely on Krisztina körút in the direction of Széna tér. BKK advises motorists to avoid the area, if possible.
From 1 August (Saturday) the lanes are slightly diverted on Margit körút but from Margit körút to Krisztina körút still two, and from Dékán utca to Margit körút still one lane can be used by motorists.
From 3 August (Monday) Várfok utca is closed between Vérmező utca and Csaba utca due to construction works. At the same time, the lower section of Várfok utca to Csaba utca is handed over to one-way traffic towards Csaba utca.
Due to construction works, from 11 August 2015 (Tuesday) to an expected period of two weeks the middle lane between Logodi utca and Várfok utca on Vérmező út will be closed. Therefore, traffic will be open on one lane next to the construction area. BKK will modify the operation of traffic lights at the intersection of Várfok utca in order to mitigate congestion which will take place due to the decrease of the number of lanes, however significant congestion can be expected ahead of the Várfok utca section. BKK advises motorists to pay extra attention on the related route section.
We kindly ask cyclists to use the bypasses during the reconstruction of Széll Kálmán tér.
The area will be accessible for cyclists from the spring of 2016.
