Traffic changes will be made in public transport service and on roads and Danube bridges on the eve and the day of St. Stephen’s Day (Tuesday, 19 August and Wednesday, 20 August 2014). Already on 19 August 2014, traffic restrictions will be in place at several locations in the city due to preparations for the celebrations, therefore some public transport lines will run on modified routes. On account of road and bridge closures, to reach the venues of all day-and late evening programmes, we recommend taking public transport to the venues instead of cars as accessing the city centre and parking will be almost impossible. Metro lines M1, M2, M3, M4, suburban railway lines, trams and buses to the city centre will run more frequently from 18:00 on 20 August to provide safe and comfortable access for passengers to the fireworks. After the fireworks, between circa 21:30 and 22:30 metro lines M1,M2, M3, M4, suburban railway lines, trams and buses from the city centre will run more frequently. Tips and recommended routes to reach venues based on events and locations
In honour of the St. Stephen’s Day, several events will be held on 19 and 20 August 2014. Please find more information on the programmes at http://augusztus20.kormany.hu. In the Buda Castle, Festival of Folk Arts will be organised. A Gastro Promenade, games and folk arts programmes will take place on the embankment in Buda on the section between Bem József tér and Erzsébet híd on both days. The inauguration of military officers of the Hungarian Army will take place at Kossuth Lajos tér on Wednesday morning. In the afternoon and early evening on 20 August the traditional Procession of the Holy Right Hand of Saint Stephen around the church via Szent István Bazilika –Széchenyi István tér – Szent István Bazilika will take place. The fireworks starts at 21:00 on the river Danube embankment between the section of Margit híd and Erzsébet híd.
Festival of Folk Arts in Buda Castle (16-20 August)
The 28th Festival of Folk Arts in Buda Castle (1st district) will last until 20 August 2014 (Wednesday). To provide easy access to this event, public transport services will run more frequently.
To access Buda Castle, we recommend the following public transport services:
- bus group 16
- special transport service: bus 216 running to Dísz tér from the city centre.

Gastro Promenade on the Danube embankment in Buda (19-20 August)
A Gastro Promenade, games and folk arts programmes will take place on the embankment in Buda on the section between Bem József tér and Erzsébet híd, a section of Csalogány utca, Lánchíd (the Chain Bridge), the tunnel, Clark Ádám tér and a section of Fő utca will be closed.
Programmes for families on Clark Ádám tér (20 August)
Children’s programmes will take place from 10:00 until 22:00 on Wednesday, 20 August at Clark Ádám tér. To reach the venue, please take trams 19 and 41. Please walk to Clark Ádám tér from Széchenyi István tér across the Lánchíd or from Döbrentei tér.
Military ceremony at Kossuth Lajos tér (20 August)
The inauguration of military officers of the Hungarian Army will take place this year at the renovated Kossuth tér. Newly-graduated students at the National University of Public Service will make their professional wows in the presence of state leaders, parents, relatives in public at 8:30 on 20 August.
Holy Mass and Religious Procession at the Basilica and its surrounding area (20 August)
The Holy Mass starts at 17:00 on 20 August in Saint Stephen’s Basilica followed by the traditional Procession of the Holy Right Hand of Saint Stephen around the church via József Attila utca – Széchenyi István tér – Akadémia utca – Arany János utca – Szent István Bazilika. The route of the procession will be closed during the event. To reach the venue, please walk 3-5 minutes from Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út metro station metro line M1 or from Arany János utca metro station metro line M3 or from Deák Ferenc tér.
Festive Fireworks Display on the Banks of the Danube (20 August)
The fireworks last from 21:00 until 21:30; as the inner city areas near the river on both sides of the city will be closed to road traffic a few hours before and after the display. We recommend taking the metro lines to the city centre and walking. Due to closures, several public transport lines will run on modified routes. Please check route diversions before you start your journey.
Weekday schedules will apply on 19 August (Tuesday) while Sunday schedules will apply on 20 August (Wednesday) for the opening hours of BKK’s ticket offices.

Public transport changes and restrictions
Metro line M2
Depending on the spectator number, Batthyány tér stop and Kossuth Lajos tér stop on metro line M2 may be closed by the police.
Boat line D13 is not in service from 19:00 on 20 August (Wednesday).
Tram line 2 runs on a shortened route to Kossuth Lajos tér from 17:00 on 19 August (Tuesday) to circa 17:00 on 20 August (Wednesday). Kossuth Lajos tér M, Országház, látógatóközpont and Jászai Mari tér stops will not be served.
From 17:00 on 20 August (Wednesday) until the last departure, tram 2 will run on a shortened route between Közvágóhíd H and Boráros tér H stops, due to preparations of the fireworks, every four minutes before and every three minutes after the fireworks. Zsil utca, Fővám tér, Március 15. tér, Vigadó tér, Eötvös tér, Széchenyi István tér, Kossuth Lajos tér M, Országház látógatóközpont and Jászai Mari tér stops will be skipped.
Tram lines 4 and 6
Depending on the spectator number, Margit híd and Petőfi híd may be closed by the police in the evening of 20 August (Wednesday). In this case, tram lines 4 and 6 will run on shortened routes between Oktogon M and South Buda terminuses and Oktogon M and Corvin-negyed M during, before and after the fireworks every three minutes.
Tram lines 18, 19 and 41
Tram lines 18, 19 and 41 will run on a shortened route between South Buda terminuses and Clark Ádám tér from the first departure on 19 August (Tuesday) until circa 17:00 on 20 August (Wednesday). Halász utca and Batthyány tér M+H stops will not be served by the trams and will not be replaced by buses due to public transport closures.
From 17:00 on 20 August (Wednesday) until the last departure, trams will run on a modified route between South Buda terminuses and Széll Kálmán tér M stops. Döbrentei tér, Clark Ádám tér, Halász utca and Batthyány tér M+H stops will be skipped.
Depending on the spectator number, the Szent Gellért embankment may be closed by the police in the evening of 20 August (Wednesday). In this case, trams 18, 19 and 41 will run on a shortened route between South Buda terminuses and Szent Gellért tér M stop.
Trams will run every 10-15 minutes before and every 10 minutes after the fireworks.
Trams 47 and 49
Depending on the spectator number, Szabadság híd may be closed by the police in the evening of 20 August (Wednesday). In this case, trams 47 and 49 will run on a shortened route between South Buda terminuses and Szent Gellért tér M stop. Trams will run during, before and after the fireworks every 7-10 minutes.
Buses 5, 8, 8A, 112 and 178
On 20 August (Wednesday) during the closure of Erzsébet híd from ca. 18:30 to 22:30, buses 5, 8, 8A, 112 and 178 run on modified routes. Bus 5 runs every 10 minutes before the fireworks and every 7-8 minutes after the event.
Buses 7 and 107
On 20 August (Wednesday) during the closure of Erzsébet híd from ca. 18:30 to 22:30, buses 7 and 107 after crossing Szabadság híd run on a modified route via Astoria–Múzeum körút–Kálvin tér M–Vámház körút–Fővám tér–Szabadság híd–Szent Gellért tér M. Buses serve the Kálvin tér M and Fővám tér M replacement bus stops in both directions.
Buses 7 and 107 run every 7-8 minutes before the fireworks and every 6 minutes after the event.
Depending on spectator numbers police may close Szabadság híd in the evening on 20 August. During this period, buses run on split routes between their terminuses in Buda and Móricz Zsigmond körtér M as well as between their terminuses in Pest and Deák Ferenc tér M.
Bus 9 on 20 August from 14:00 to 20:00, bus 9 to Kőbánya vasútállomás does not serve the Szent István Bazilika stop due to the Holy Right Hand religious procession.
Depending on spectator numbers police may close Margit híd in the evening on 20 August. During this period, bus 9 runs on split routes between the Óbuda, Bogdáni út and Margit híd, budai hídfő H stops as well as between the Kőbánya alsó vá. and Nyugati pályaudvar M stops.
Bus 9 runs every 4-5 minutes before the fireworks and every 4 minutes after the event.
The 22nd Sziget Festival will be held on Óbuda Island from Monday 11 August to Monday 18 August 2014. Thanks to the agreement between Sziget and BKK Centre for Budapest Transport, special CityPASS wristbands will go on sale entitling holders to public transport and other special services during the event. Furthermore, we are launching special dedicated transport services and provide higher frequencies on suburban railway line H5 and tram line 6. During the event BKK will increase the capacity of bus services on night lines 901 and 918. To reach the venue at Óbudai-sziget it’s highly recommended to use public transport instead of your car.
During this year’s, the 22nd Sziget Festival
– we provide more frequent and also night services on suburban railway H5, higher frequencies on tram line 6, additionally we also provide higher capacity on night buses serving the area,
– we launch special dedicated boat services to Sziget,
– we sell jointly with Sziget CityPASS wristbands which entitle holders among others to free public transport on BKK’s services within the area of the City of Budapest, to free entry to spas and pools, provides discounts on Budapest museum tickets and the zoo,
– we provide shuttle bus transfers for CityPASS holders from the airport directly to Sziget.
BKK at the Sziget Festival
From Monday, 11 August 2014 onwards we will be on site at Sziget. An Ikarus 260 brand Hungarian bus converted by Budapest Transport Company (BKV) to reflect the atmosphere of the festival with happy colours will serve as a BKK Customer Service Point. In addition to getting useful information of our services, you will be able to purchase different types of public transport tickets and to gather information about our products from our colleagues who speak different languages.
The BKK Customer Service Point is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00 at its location near the main Sziget entrance by the K-híd.
TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO THE SZIGET FESTIVAL ON ÓBUDA ISLAND
The venue of Sziget Festival is Óbuda Island located in the northern part of Budapest and it can be reached from the Buda side of the river Danube. Access is recommended by suburban railway line H5 from the “Filatorigát” station, alternatively by the dedicated boat service, but a nearly one-kilometre-long walk is also an option from from the “Óbuda, Bogdáni út” terminus of buses 9, 86 and 226 or from the “Kaszásdűlő H” stop of buses 34, 106, 134.
Suburban railway line H5 can be easily accessed at the following connection points:
- “Batthyány tér M+H” stop of metro line M2, which is also the city terminus of suburban railway H5
- the “Margit híd, budai hídfő H” stop of trams 4 and 6
- Batthyány tér M+H stop of trams 19 as well as of bus 86 from South Buda
- from Liszt Ferenc International Airport: bus 200E to “Kőbánya-Kispest M” terminus, then metro line M3 to “Deák Ferenc tér M” station and connection to metro line M2 to “Batthyány tér M+H”
- from both Déli and Keleti pályaudvar train stations take metro line M2
- from “Árpád híd M” national bus terminal take tram line 1 to “Szentlélek tér H”
- from the regional bus terminal at “Kelenföldi pályaudvar M” train station take tram line 19
- from the “Népliget M” national and international bus terminal, take metro line M3 to “Deák Ferenc tér M”, transfer to M2 to “Batthyány tér M+H”
- from the Stadion regional and national bus terminal take metro line M2 to “Batthyány tér M+H”
In addition to the above, BKK launches special direct services to Óbudai-sziget: only the Sziget-Budapest CityPASS entitles festival-goers to use the shuttle bus transfer services to and from the airport as well as the special boat service to the island. The boat service can also be used without the CityPASS by buying tickets on board at the price of HUF 900.

HIGHER FREQUENCY AND MORE CAPACITY ON SOME OF OUR PUBLIC TRANSPORT ROUTES
We are adjusting our services to accommodate the significantly higher-than-usual level of traffic in the area as follows: in order to support the increased passenger numbers during the Sziget Festival, we provide higher frequencies in the timetable as well as more capacity on some of our services.
- Suburban railway H5 (Szentendre): from 5:30 on Monday, 11 August to 20:00 on Monday, 18 August suburban railway line H5 runs more frequently with six-car trains. Also, night service is provided during the festival between Batthyány tér and Kaszásdűlő stations every 15 minutes.
- Tram 6 operates more frequently in the evenings and at night from Monday, 11 August to Tuesday, 18 August.
- Night buses 901 and 918: service will be provided by larger-capacity articulated buses from Óbuda to the Hungária ringroad from Sunday, 17 August to Monday, 18 August.
- Bus line 226 operates shortened and modified route from “Nyugati pályaudvar M” through Margitsziget to “Óbuda, Bugdáni út” terminus during the event from Saturday, 9 August to Sunday, 17 August.
SPECIAL DEDICATED BOAT SERVICES
Between Monday, 11 August and Sunday, 17 August dedicated boat services connect Petőfi tér (Erzsébet híd) and Óbudai-sziget (boat service D21) as well as Jászai Mari tér and Óbudai-sziget. CityPASS holders can use the boat service without extra charge; all others must buy a ticket on board for 900 HUF.
The boats serve the following piers:
- Petőfi tér (Erzsébet-híd): 4th pier towards Vigadó tér from the docking point of BKK public transport boat services
- Batthyány tér MAHART Pier 2, next pier towards Margit híd from the docking point of BKK public transport boat services
- Jászai Mari tér Pier 2, 6th pier towards Árpád from the docking point of BKK public transport boat services
- Óbudai-sziget pier – Hajógyári Sziget, docking point of BKK public transport boat services
The boats operate every 30 minutes on 11-12 August from 16:00 to 21:00; and also between Wednesday, 13 August to Sunday, 17 August from 14:00 to 1:00.

SZIGET-AIRPORT SHUTTLE SERVICE
From Saturday, 9 August to Wednesday, 13 August – during the days of “moving in” – and the first days free direct transfer service is provided from Terminal 2 of Liszt Ferenc International Airport to the car park of the Óbuda-Auchan store only in the direction from the airport to town every 30 minutes between 8:45 and 00:30 at night exclusively for Budapest CityPASS holders. To pick up your CityPASS please stop by at BKK’ Customer Service Centre at the arrivals level of Terminal 2B.
On Monday 18 August – the day of “moving out” – free direct transfer service is provided from Óbuda – Auchan shopping centre car park to Terminal 2 of Liszt Ferenc International Airport only in the direction to the airport every 10 minutes in the early hours, every 15 minutes in the morning and every 20 minutes later on between 3:00 in the morning and 14:00 exclusively for Budapest CityPASS holders.

Within the area of the Sziget, dedicated and exclusive taxi services are provided by City Taxi. The taxi services will be monitored and controlled with special focus.
SERVICES AVAILABLE WITH THE SZIGET CityPASS
BKK Centre for Budapest Transport provides unlimited travel for Sziget CityPASS holders on scheduled public transport services: on the full tram-, trolleybus- and metro network and on the cogwheel-railway; on buses up to the first stop following the Budapest city boundary, on the suburban railway within the Budapest city area as well as on public transport boat lines D11 and D12 on weekdays only and also all dedicated boat services to the Sziget. Only Sziget CityPASS holders can take advantage of the airport transfers.
Sziget CityPASS also ensures one-time free entry to any of Budapest’s many spas or swimming pools and 20% discount for all later visits. Further discounts are given as follows:
- different rates of discount for the major museums
- 20% discount for the Budapest Zoo and
- 20% off the price for the Center of Scientific Wonders
- 20% discount of the combined Giraffe Hop on Hop Off sightseeing bus and boat ticket
CityPasses are valid from midnight on Thursday, 7 August to midnight on Tuesday 19 August at the price of HUF 9,900 (33 €).
The 48-hour CityPass is valid from the day of purchase to midnight of the following day at the price of 3,600 HUF (12 €).
Our ticket offices below are CityPASS sales points. Wristband passes are on sale at BKK’s Customer Service points at the airport and at Sziget sales points as well.
Please note that the CityPASS is not valid for entry to the festival.
ROAD TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS IN THE AREA OF ÓBUDA ISLAND
For security reasons, please note that traffic restrictions will be in place again during the Sziget Festival in the area of Óbuda Island. From 20:00 on Friday, 8 August to 18:00 on 18 August the section between Mozaik utca and the Auchan connection road of Jégtörő utca will be closed, also the section between Mozaik utca 16. and Jégtörő utca will be closed.
No stopping and parking restriction will be in place at the following locations during the same time period:
- on both sides of Reményi Ede utca between Szentendrei út and Jégtörő út
- on both sides of Benedek Elek utca between Szentendrei út and Jégtörő út
- on both sides of Vajda János utca between Szentendrei út and Jégtörő út
- on both sides of Mozaik utca Szentendrei út and Jégtörő út
- on both sides of Leányfalu utca between Reményi Ede utca and Mozaik utca
- on both sides of the Óbudai embankment between Mozaik utca and Szépvölgyi út
- on both sides of Jégtörő út between the Auchan access road and Mozaik utca
- on the Auchan connection road and the area between Szentendrei út and Jégtörő út to the east of the roundabout
As the Sziget ticket offices will be located in the parking area near the intersection of Jégtörő utca and K-híd leading to the island, it will be prohibited to stop there.
Only special permit holders will have car access to the area marked by Szentendrei út – Reményi Ede út – Jégtörő utca – Mozaik utca during the event.
At the request of the Budapest Police, car access will be prohibited to the section of the lower Buda embankment between the southern access point near Margit híd and the Mozaik utca junction – with the help of police cordons – every day from 18:00 to 22:00 between 10 and 17 August. Car access to the closed section of the embankment is possible for direct traffic only based on the evaluation of the police.
Have a good time at the Sziget Festival!
On weekends of the last summer month, special heritage transport services are offered this year again. You can travel by regular heritage tramlines in Budapest and by suburban railway lines to Gödöllő. A unique heritage tram night-time photo tour is also offered in Budapest.
Heritage tram night-time photo tour
Take a unique night journey from 16 August (Saturday) by the legendary Ganz UV tramline along the most beautiful sights of the Hungarian capital to admire the lights of the Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion and the Chain Bridge. The circle ride also takes you to the routes of the narrow street tramlines, outskirt of Budapest.
You can board only at Hungária kocsiszín terminus since the heritage tram will stop only at specific photo spots and regular stops will not be served. Meeting, registration and boarding are from 22:45 at Hungária kocsiszín on 16 August (Saturday). Expected departure of the tram marked with an “F” is at 23.10. The program is expected to finish at Hungária kocsiszín at 4.40 AM on Sunday.

Sunday heritage tram service along the Danube river embankment
Turn back time by riding the hundred-year-old tramcars along the most beautiful sights of the Hungarian capital and feel the original atmosphere of the late 19th-century Budapest. There is an outstanding view along the route that you can admire, such as the Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion and Gellért Hill.
Hundred-year-old tramcars marked with a “J” are in operation on 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 August (Sunday) on tram line 2 which is represented among National Geographic magazine’s Top 10 tram rides.
Vintage trams depart every hour from Jászai Mari tér terminus between 16:56 and 21:56 and every hour from Közvágóhíd between 16:25 and 21:25.
Heritage suburban railway to Gödöllő on 20 August
Visit Sissi’s castle (Empress Elisabeth of Austria) on Saint Stephen’s Day (20 August) in Gödöllő, which is a colorful little town situated East of Budapest. BKV and BKK jointly operate a 62-year-old MVIII-type electric motor-train marked with a “G” on 20 August (Wednesday) between Örs vezér tere M and Gödöllő.
The heritage suburban railway departs from Örs vezér tere M at 9.16, 11.46 and 14.16 and goes back from Gödöllő at 10.37, 13.07 and 15.37.
Please note that that special heritage service fares apply, passes and Budapest Cards are not valid. One-way adult fare is 500 HUF, children, ages 6-14: 300 HUF, under age 6: free.
When travelling outside the administrative boundaries of Budapest, please purchase a heritage transport extension ticket. The fare of the heritage transport extension ticket equals that of the heritage transport ticket within Budapest.
Daily heritage tickets are also available for adults 2000 HUF, children, ages 6-14: 1200 HUF. Tickets are available on the spot but you can also purchase them at out ticket offices in Batthyány tér M, Bosnyák tér, Deák tér M, Hűvösvölgy, Katona József utca, Akácfa utca, Nyugati tér M, Széll Kálmán tér M.
